Ortho-K Washout

If you are an existing ortho-k wearer from another office and are considering switching to our office, we may ask you to undergo a "washout" period before fitting you with new lenses. The purpose of this washout period is to determine your actual, true, and untreated prescription so that we can provide you with the best possible treatment.

Ortho-k lenses are designed to reshape the cornea and improve vision, but over time, they may also warp or mold the cornea in unexpected ways. If you continue wearing your existing lenses, the residual effects of the old lenses may interfere with the accurate assessment of your true prescription and the effectiveness of the new lenses we will be fitting.

During the washout period, we will ask you to stop wearing your current ortho-k lenses for a certain period of time to allow your corneas to return to their natural shape and to ensure that we can provide you with a precise and accurate prescription. The duration of the washout period may vary depending on your individual case and the specific type of lenses you were previously wearing.

Once the washout period is complete, we will review your untreated prescription, parameters, and ocular health to determine whether it is feasible to refit you in ortho-k lenses. Depending on the results, we may recommend alternative treatment options that are better suited to your individual needs and requirements.

If the washout period is expected to be longer (often due to a higher pretreatment prescription), we may offer you a washout soft contact lens package. This package includes temporary soft contact lenses that you will wear during the washout period to help ease you back to your pretreatment state. These day-time contact lenses will provide you with clear vision while your corneas adjust back to their natural shape.

We understand that the washout period may be inconvenient for you, but it is an essential step in ensuring the success of your ortho-k treatment. By undergoing the washout period and allowing us to fit you with new lenses from scratch, we can provide you with the best possible vision correction and optimize your long-term eye health. If you have any questions or concerns about the washout process or the washout package, please don't hesitate to ask us.
